High gas tank pressure and cabin smell while wheeling?

Had the LX out for a weekend of wheeling and it did great. The following weekend we took a day trip. About 80 degrees outside, started with a full tank of gas. We started smelling fuel very strongly in the cabin about a fourth of the way through the trip.

Finally stopped and _slowly_ vented the gas tank. Lots of drama there- fuel fumes we could see and it took over 5 minutes to vent all the pressure.

Any thoughts as to what the cause or issue may be. No hard core wheeling- just a couple good obstacles and lots of bumpy travel at higher altitude (10k feet apk)

I had some fumes after a long day wheeling in the desert but it only happened the one time. Didn't really smell them unless the window was down. Not 100% sure if it was the heat or ???. I was only about 3-4k though.

Your fuel cap sounds like it failed. California smog test have been testing them for years. They must hold so much vacuum and so much pressure, if they fail, excess pressure builds up and it starts venting anywhere it can. I would replace the cap or have it checked at a smog test shop or good dealership that you trust. There might also be a series of check valves in the fuel evaporation system to get checked.
