Hi output alternator,smoking wire

I've checked into the cost of upgrading my stock alt, and have been quoted ~$150 to get ~90 amps. This was from a small specality alternator shop locally in Seattle. Only thing was that they couldn't tell me much about how many amps at low rpms. Wonder what you learned in your re-wind?
