I'm looking at Stone's picture and I can see lots of ways for water to get in. That wiring harness would be impossible to waterproof, especially with wire loom coverings. Each one of those screw holes is another source for water instrusion as are the threads for the fitting on top.

Hello Moose!

Check out HERE for the specs on the Converter, and also HERE to read what NEMA-4 means.

The screws do not go into the case. The harness is sealed with 1"-2" of silicone (which is possibly where the water leaked in---as Crushers says---probably a one off, as there are quite a few out there now in LandCruiser applications.

It would likely be best to have it pointed down, to reduce probability, however I will continue with mine pointed up as datum and test.

It would be best to have it inside I suppose, but I like the NEMA-4 enclosure and finding a spot tucked into the engine compartment.

This is all conjecture at this point anyway, until I recieve it and send it to the manufacturer for checking and coverage. I've had one sitting on the fender of my BJ42 for at least 3 or 4 years, to subject it to vibration, and moisture...no water issues at all! The truck has been stored the last winter though...

Thanks for you comments and ideas.

Regards

The NEMA folks will never give you a 100% guarantee, check out the wording:

NEMA 4
Type 4 enclosures are intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose directed water; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.

I stand corrected however, this thing should not have flooded with just normal use.

Yes, that is right, which makes this so interesting.
