2mbb's got ~3,800 posts, vs/ my 200 or so... I'd seriously go with his advice before mine, that the smog pump would not affect the fuel mixture. Sorry, I guess I assumed it was helping to control the vacuum systems that run all of the various fuel mixture and emission and timing advance switches. Once again, my disclaimer: I am not a mechanic, I just have owned a bunch of older vehicles that have had about everything go wrong with them, and over time I started fixing more and more of the simple things and doing some troubleshooting. Some of the others on here are the real gurus, but heck, I like to chime in and learn a bit.
Seeing if the pulley turns freely would at least be a simple rule out though. Look for the adjustment bolts on one of the components attached to the same belt. One of the components should have a bracket that adjusts belt tension. Getting the belt off for a simple test should be easy enough.
So, starts fine? just runs poopy with throttle? and has squeel?
If you NEVER had the noise before I am inclined to think it is related. Find the noise and the culprit?
Is there a creek around that isn't fully blown, got yer 5wt handy?
Might make the time pass easier while the mechanic gives it a try...
Oh yeah, remembered another thing. You can take the air filter off and manually push the throttle( motor off); a mist or stream of gas should appear from the top of the carb when depressing the throttle.
I believe this will show if there is a blockage at the main jet (someone else confirm?)
