Not my wife's fault - slowed down and stopped for yellow light before turning left.
Damage to rear lights and associated fender, tupper ware caps damage, and fender flare falling off.

I would love to replace the OEM with aftermarket metal bumper and wondering how I can do that under my circumstances.

The guy that hit my 80 is supposed to be covered by Mercury Insurance. And I have State Farm.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks Eric and Mike for your reply.

So, I just tell my agent that I want to substitute to a comparable price non OEM and no hassle?

No safety issue question because its not OEM? No raising the rates because it looks like it goes offroad.

Just like to know before talking to my agent - I like to be ready to say it has been done before.

The last time my agent saw my 80 it was stock. :grinpimp:

No, they will only pay for what you had on there. Try to get them to cover real Toyota OEM parts for whatever needs replaced, not cheap aftermarket on things like lights and bumpers. Also make sure they put in their estimate to paint enough of the car to blend in the damaged area to the existing panels. If you feel their estimate is too low, tell them you want to get another quote, then go to an autobody shop yourself and get them to quote it. Once you reach an agreed price settlement with them, don't let them tell you to just "take it to our preferred shop" and they will fix it. Instead insist that you want to choose your own shop, and get them to write you a check for the amount. Then you can do whatever you want with the money, like get a different bumper.

They will take lots of pictures, so no way around them discovering all the mods.

They will write up an estimate to get it repaired, which may or may not include new oem parts. My insurance is required to use oem, but not necessarily new - they have to check the local wrecking yards first.

You dont have to accept their initial settlement. If you think it is low, get another estimate or send them comps for other cruisers in similar condition (kinda bad timing - the market sucks right now). Dont settle until you're satisfied. Once you settle, you can take it to their suggested shop, your own shop or just get the money and fix it yourself.

At this point you can put whatever bumper you want.

Another thing - if you were to take it to a shop and once they get into it they find additional damage that was not apparent initially the shop can write a supplemental. The insurance company would come to the shop and inspect it or take them at their word depends on the situation. Anyway, if you just take the cash and fix it yourself, make sure you look for any damage not in the estimate and add it to the claim.

Check out www.padgettfabrication.com where I offer Lifetime Warranty and some decent discounts for forum members, Military, deployed combat military, Police, EMS and Fire. My bumpers are direct replacement and even include integrated Receiver hitches among many other options. The link on the site goes to eBay where I sell the FULLY LOADED model for $550 with FREE SHIPPING.

Two week turnaround

Get a Sean "Houston Fab" rear bumper. I have one. I am sure the $$ insurance will pay for the OEM bumper and parts, you can get a nice Sean bumper with little cash out of your pocket.

If you need an OEM bumper and corner caps to validate to insurance you went factory.. hell you can have mine. Wrong color of course, but if you need them their available.
