Anyone here removed the plastic shaft guards on the rear shocks for a BP-51 suspension? I didn't install these but I want to temporarily remove or slide them up and out of the way so I can pull the shock off of the mount. I afraid of breaking the plastic and am not sure how to unclip them. It seems like the retainer clip might rotate enough to let me put a wrench on the bolt but, again, I'm afraid of breaking the plastic parts.

You can just twist them, and the guards will rotate clockwise or counter clockwise so you can get to the bolt. The plastic is pretty darn burly. You won't break it. I've never tried removing them. I trimmed them to install my bud built rear shock armor. Oh yeah. Need to finish that project.

thanks guys.

Honestly, if it breaks, don’t sweat it. They are not very robust and one of mine fell off early in their life...so I yanked them off for good.

**Add a set of BudBuilt shock guards and you’re all set for major strike protection.

Did you run very long without any guards? Just wondering how bad flying gravel might be on the nice nice shinny shafts? Will Add BB guards some day.

Definitely leave them on if you can.
I just meant that if something happens to them...adding guards is a worthy idea.
I recently added the BB guards and trimmed the BP-51 shaft guards so I could keep those as well. I wouldn't run without guards if you are doing much of any gravel type roads. I agree the mounting of the stock BP-51 guards leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree. When I say don’t worry if they break, that assumes replacing them with other guards. Also... BB guards were made to leave room for those, I believe. It’s just that in my experience, the mounts of the plastic guards are iffy and prone to fall loose.

I have both the steel Budbuilt guards and the plastic guards that came on the King 2.5s, they easily clear each other. Seems like cheap(ish) insurance given the cost and downtime that a damaged shaft would inflict.
