I have the search and even crutchfield, but I can't find a good straight answer. I have done plenty of stereo head unit installs on plenty of vehicles. My question is, what kind wire harness and fit kits have you guys used on 2001 LX's? I am going to install a single din Alpine that will have a cable running from the back to my iPod/iPad/iPhone, whichever one I want to hook up at the time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

That is horrible that there isnt a wire harness for the LX.

wait a second, I used a wiring harness on my LX. The connection was beside the glove compartment above the passenger kick panel. I had to disconnect the factor amp and the wiring harness plugged right in there.

However I did have to extend the wiring harness by about a foot to get it to reach the head unit in the center console.

edit: I should add that I lost the use of the power antenna and I had to wire up my own dimmer line (I just tapped the taillight fuse)

You are talking about the amplifier bypass harness (from Metra most likely), where the new head unit powers the speakers bypassing the amplifier. Doing this is not optimum at all since the LX/LC speakers are in need of 5 channels of amplification (most head units are 4ch) and are of non standard impedance.

There is not an available head unit harness that connects to the 22pin head unit plug in the dash for connection to the existing factory amp / speaker system. Such a harness typically includes connectivity for the power antenna and dimmer ala Metra for the Land Cruiser (20 pin).

I just realized you guys are talking about 470's, where as mine is a 450, maybe that makes a difference. I didn't notice a degradation in quality when I went from the stock radio to unplugging the amplifier with the aftermarket head unit, but I'm not an audio guy and my speakers are 15 years old.

Maybe I'll consider looking into this next time my dash is apart, I like wiring stuff.

So in order to install any head unit into an LX w/ Mark Levingston is to direct wire it into the vehicle? I guess it might be time to study up on the wires and stuff!

Check the link I posted above.

Okay after doing a search, I found this:

Anybody use this in the older LX's? Wondering how it would work in a 2001.
This seems pretty awesome and cheaper than buying a $1000 Pioneer that will do the same thing!

Nevermind, just saw that it's for 2006 and up.

Not only is for 2006 plus but you dont need to spend $1000 to get those features in a pioneer... Amazon has the top-o-line pioneer (non-nav) avh8400 for $519

Hmmmm...this looks promising. Looking into it further! Sure would be pretty. Ice to have DVD and back up camera. And Pandora integration is almost a must.

I had been reserved to the fact that I would end up buying the Pioneer Avic x930BT for at least $700. I am now wondering what the difference is between that and the AVH-P8400BH? Other than the price. Anyone know which one has the best integration with iPhone/iPads? I would also like to be able to keep the stock ML amp and speaker set up too. If that makes a difference

And of course I post before thinking. The AVIC has navigation, and the other doesn't.
