Head Gasket price estimate ?

I'm doing mine right now and with all the work involved I'm surprised by some of the prices I've seen on this post. If I owned the shop I wouldn't charge less than $3000+ I wonder if the reason you see so many blown 80 series head gaskets is that if it were done previously the rear head bolts (cylinder #6) are such a bitch to get to and properly torque. Shops tend to want to get the job done and get it out ASAP.

Since you include machining I'll assume you think the head is ok and no cracks.

I'm several years removed from having mine done, but w/o a new head, probably $2500+ at a dealer.

I appreciate the detailed response! :)

I would charge time and materials for this job and do.

It’s easy with the engine out, not as much with it in there. Some things can be really hard to get at. I am not doing no HG job at a flat rate.

My head guy is good and affordable, $500 in labor to do everything on the head. Still got to get it out, take it to him and re-install correctly. Your manifolds are more than likely in need of a cleaning as well plus the throttle body. Both get totally gummed up over time.

Cheers
