Hello

I have a HDJ80 and want to touch up on timing on my ip. But I have a dilemma:

I own 2 engine manuals from toyota and they give out 3 totally seperate timing settings for the 1HD-T Incetion pump plunger.

manual 1 says the plunger stroke to be set to 1.29-1.35mm (0.0508-0.0531 in.)

manual 2 says the plunger stroke to be set to 1.37-1.43 (0.0539-0.0563 in.)for Austrailia and 1.52-1.58mm (0.0598-0.0622 in.) for Europe...

What to beleive and who to trust? both are factory repair manuals from Toyota....

so you are saying that I can set it to anything from 1.29 to 1.58? I find that very weird.
And what I am asking is WHAT manual to trust. they are two.... and state different numbers. Both from Toyota.

You are in Europe,go with the European setting. I think there are other settings to go with the plunger stroke.
Trust them all.

is this setting purely emissions setting? can i go higher than 1.58? what exactly does this control? I have some ideas about it but would not cry if someone can explain this to a mortal man... :)

The stroke controls the timing. The stroke increases when you turn the pump towards the engine, which then advances the timing. Timing refers to when the fuel is injected into the cylinder in relation to the highest part of the stroke (yes, that's what she said).
If you advance too far (over 1.58) or retard too far ( under 1.29) you will not get a good burn. Too retarded you'll get black smoke and poor economy, too far advanced you get white smoke and pinging.
good enough for a mortal :grinpimp: ?

You can go higher than the given spec range of adjustment. You can even slot the holes further to gain even more advance if thats what youre going for.
I dont recommend it though. Generally the higher end spec is more than enough for most people(and motors). Dont tell that to the cummins guys tho. Lol

very good! thank you! but the pinging... is that a sound of pre-ignition of sorts or what? I will stick to the specs.. but the higher end I guess :)

Yes, pinging is technically the wrong word. it sounds more and more 'diesely', if you know what I mean...:)
