Since owning my 81 ive noticed a slight hard shift in the auto trans when it shifts from first to second. One mechanic i talked to said this could just be the way the tranny is designed in this vehicle. Wondering if anyone with an 81 has the same thing?

No hard shifts, that I notice on mine.
When I got the EVB installed it did that along with some other things... tinkering around with the kickdown cable pretty much solved it... What worked best for me was when i went out I took a 14mm wrench with me as I made changes from stop to stop while the tranny is hot.
What does the Oil look like in the tranny?
Is it sitting at the HOT mark after driving around to get it hot, 30 or so mins? When you check this make sure you go though all the gears and leave the truck runnins as per FSM.

I'm not sure what it looks like. I just had it changed at a shop I deal with as preventative maintenance which I'm going to start doing every 50000km. That didn't change anything but I added almost a full 24oz of lucas transmission fix and it seems to be shifting very smooth now. I was worried about over-fill but the Lucas web site says just go ahead and add it to your existing ATF without removing any...
Ever use that stuff?

Automatic transmissions are a pain, but do the usual checks. Even though you just had the fluid changed, keep an eye on it and the colour and the smell of it (burn ATF has a specific scent to it). I too am not a fan of "snake oil - fix all in a bottle" crap. It usually does more damage in the long run by cloging up things and sticking to small parts.
Check your kick down cable, if you have access to an IR thermometer gun check you temperature right after a good drive. How is your fuel economy?

Fiddle with the kickdown a bit and see if you can improve it. It's an easy adjustment. Otherwise do you have any driveline slop? The A440 tranny was prone to output shaft wear, not sure about the A442.
