Greetings,
Just drove my 1990 HDJ cross country, AC no longer works, thankfully after reaching west coast. It’s had a slow leak for years, been topped up with R12 three times, taking about a lb a year.
It’s in a shop right now, and they are adamant the compressor is “internally failed”, but the system does not leak. Dye was put in it about a month ago, they don’t see a leak. They say it had 2.4 lbs in it, and capacity is 2.5, “so it’s good”.
That doesn’t track to me. I’m no A/C mechanic, but it stands to reason if you don’t have all your refrigerant, you have a leak. FSM is hard to read on true capacity, I don’t see a spec for single A/C with fridge/ice, but the dual A/C with fridge/ice takes 3.3 lbs.
Shop quoted $2k to replace compressor and associated parts. My gut feeling is the compressor is not shot, and there is a leak. Leaning towards letting them evac the system, then replacing o-rings/dryer and converting to 134.
Anyone got experiance on this?
