Living in Germany for a couple more years and looking to get back into an LC, preferably an HDJ, which will get a few European adventures before getting shipped back to the U.S. I've spent far too many years out of a Toyota, but the trade off for a GTI and track days was also fun lol

Looking at a late-2000 registered model with the 4 speed auto. Appears to be very well kept inside and out, apart from what I would consider normal wear and tear. Odo has appx 350k km on it. 2 owner rig, unsure if the check book was maintained, but t-belt was completed in late 2021. Based on t-belt change and mileage after, seems the vehicle was relatively lightly used for the last 2 years.

So, what am I walking into if I were to purchase something like this and what should I be looking for when giving it an overview/test drive? It's located a fair distance away, so I want to be prepared. Should there be some concern about the low mileage over the past two years (less than 10k driven per year)? Finally, apart from my normal preventative maintenance I'd complete initially, what other big items might be be problematic in the near future? I'm no master mechanic, but I have completed lots of work on a previous FJ80 including an engine replacement and am fairly confident I can complete most, if not all, repairs myself if needed.

Done a fair bit of searching here and Google, and the 1HD-FTE seems like a stout engine capable of many more thousands of km if maintained, but would love some expert input from everyone else as well.

Thanks for the advice!

Did you check this guide from slee?

Have just been in Landsberg last week, greetings to Bavaria :-)

Yup, checked their guide. They built the diffs for my Trail Whale when I lived in Colorado Springs. Used their 80 Series guide when I bought that. Unfortunately it doesn't really list anything 1HDT specific and only US spec options. I know the 2UZ will live forever (there's a GX470 few hours away with over 300k miles on it!), but with a diesel I know there are other complexities.

It's also hard to gauge how serious diesel engine issues since a lot of the forum post results I see in Google come from countries with poor fuel, rugged conditions, and what seems like limited maintenance facilities.

Sorry you had to experience Germany during that heat wave! 🥵 I was in Paris and it was 85+, but was told it was the same in Bavaria. No AC in this house...

This.

Plenty here in the land of Oz, and no real long term issues. HDJ100 prices here are pretty much out of control, in fact a 2007 HDJ100 generally has a higher asking price than a 2007 VDJ200 (all other things being equal).

Get a full check, your main issues will be injectors, the factory ones are frightfully expensive however there are OEM and remanufactured options. Otherwise it seems you've unearthed a pretty good one.

4 speed auto

This is almost certainly an A343F (see post below) - I have no knowledge of it however there are plenty of HDJ/FZJ/HZJ 80s and 100/105s with this transmission.

HDJ100’s had the A442F. The 4banger diesels got the A343Fs

So in Germany, they don't do model years, only the date of first registration. Maybe you have some knowledge of the 4 speed to 5 speed auto timeline.

After all I have read, the 5 Speed Auto didn't come in until the US MY2003 (so mid to late 2002 production dates). Was it available in other markets prior? Surely it wasn't as early as a few listings I've seen with first registrations of early 2002 or before. Can't seem to find anything that says otherwise.

Would absolutely be content with the 4 speed in a 100. Hoping next week gives me an opportunity to make the drive and take a look (this weekend is shot with work).

Just found this thread late, but it looks like the FSM shows the Euro spec HDJ100 got the A750 in 08.2003, one year after every other market.

Since you’re being shipped home I’ll assume military, it would be sweet to buy something under 25 years old and get working on it before coming home!

Did you get to see the cruiser??

My inability to remember to respond has gotten the best of me lol

I did get a chance to go see it. Apart from what I expected the rough areas would be, it was in relatively decent condition. The frame/undercarriage was remarkably clean as well, with only minor surface rust. No rot. However, the transfer case had obviously been cracked open (soooo muuuch RTV at the seams) and it was leaking considerably. Also, another leak on the engine (clearly oil but unknown origin).

If I was in the US and I could get it for the right price, it would have been a no brainer. But since I live in Germany where dealers don't like to haggle much on prices and I cannot do any work at my residence at my own pace, it wasn't worth the effort. People think HDJs are worth their weight in gold here. Folks with beat up 600k+ km rigs looking for $20k.

Gen 3 Pajeros here go quiet cheap though. Hoping to get a look at one with a 3.2 diesel, much lower mileage, 5 speed manual, and rear locker. For 1/3 of the price of an HDJ. Cost savings will go towards convincing my wife to buy a 2025+ 4Runner or Land Cruiser when we get back instead to replace her aging Touareg TDI (which to be fair, has been a phenomenal vehicle for us, just lacks the new tech and feels outdate).
