Hi,

I'm told that these eventually fail. However, these units cannot be had from Toyota anymore. So what the consensus to do here? Get aftermarket parts? If so, which ones or does the entire unit fail?

The whole unit may fail at some point, but it is repairable by replacing the rubber seals or O-rings. However, most of the time, it is the brake booster pump motor that eventually fails, depending on its age. Luckily, replacement motors made in China are widely available all over the internet.
Here is the video how to remove it. I would suggest don't fix it, if it's not broken. Price of Chinese motor is from 40 USD to 80 USD. A genuine motor is with the assembly is listed for 824 USD on eBay. Here the eBay Link
