Hi guys, I am around the world in my Lc HDJ 80. In Uyuni, Bolivia the bolt to the timing belt tensioner snapped and 4 valves bent and the camshaft broke. As the altitude here is 4,000 metres and it its getting below zero in the night nobody use or know much about diesel LCs.

However, I managed to source a used head from a diesel including a camshaft and valves. Here you have to improvise.

We (an English speaking mecanic and I) are now putting the head together. We have the following issues:

One of the intake valves have no clearance even with the thinnest shim. Can we take a bit off the valve a the top, there are some space there? Or is better to grind the top of the shim?

You can grind the end of the valve stem.

Grinding the shim is not a good idea. You'll never get it flat or smooth enough without specialist equipment, and you'll make it too thin

grinding the top of the stem is good. It's also possible to grind the bottom of the lifter, there is a special $900 tool for it or if a lathe is available you can wrap the lifter in tape, chuck it up, then use a dremel adapter in the tool post holding a girding stone. This will squarely grind it with a smooth finish.
