Yesterday I took of the timing gear cover and I have a few questions. The cause of this investigation was a squeak coming from the back side of the harmonic balancer.

1. Should I continue to run this harmonic balancer- is it likely failing, or just showing some age- the rubber is begining to separate a little on the edges. There is no sign of paint cracking around the rivets. Could this be the cause of the squeak? See pics

2. Is the pressure of the harmonic balancer all that holds the slinger in place? No key way or other ways it locks one?

My suspicion is that the crankshaft nut was not tight enough, and when the engine oil heated up the slinger was squeaking? Any thoughts? Thanks to all.
Or perhaps it more likely that the uneven wear on the oil seal was the cause.
