OK. I am going to do this by the book and see what happens.

According to FSM, here is the step by step when this happens

Check (in order):

1- Coolant Temp Sensor
2- Gas quality
3- Idle speed control Valve
4- Fuel Pressure Control System
5- Intake Air Temp Sensor Circuit
6- Cold Start System

I figured I would start with the top 6

Replaced 1 with OEM Toyota. No change.
Gas is from Shell/Chevron. No change
Have no idea what 3 is AND the FSM does not provide a reference page??
4...Which one is the VSV?? There are about three on top of the Valve cover that match the pic in the FSM. Fuel pump is fine AND I have tried the cheap trick of keeping it on i.e. bypassing the AFM which makes me rule out, in my opinion, 5.
5...AFM. FSM states to test this at the ECU. Any easier way?
6...Will wait.

Thx

3 its the big screw on the throttle body

4 trace the hose from the fuel pressure regulator, then check volts at connector while running.

5 in the FSM there is a section on just the AFM, and how to check values.

but by opening the door on the AFM, it does kind of rule out the testing of it, and also cause it runs fine otherwise, right?

I have been brain storming this problem too.

seems like when i cycle the key it does it less often.

maybe the EGR valve is getting opened right at startup?

i'll try testing for that, do the same, see what happens.
course i havent had a warm day here in a while.

but my top is off!
