I need you guys to help me with a doubt I have. I read somewhere (maybe here) that licensed hams are not allowed to transmit in CB. Is this correct?

Is it that HAMS cant transmit using our HAM equipment because of the Wattage (sp?) regulations in CB? Or Ham s simply CAN NOT Use CB equipment and/or frequencies?

I was looking for info on thins in the ARRL website but could not find info on the matter. I would appreciate if some of you could assist me in clearing this up.

Thanks.

No.

No one can legally transmit at more than 4 watts in CB, ham or not.

Ham bands are different frequencies than CB, you are comparing apples with oranges.

Maybe I didn't explain myself too well. (I have been up since 3am)

I'm a HAM operator, my call YY5DCV. I'm not comparing ham bands to CB. Im trying to clarify a legal issue that I read about in the US.

Again, I read that HAMS cant operate in CB. The person who wrote it was not specific enough and did not specify if:

HAM Operators CANT operate in CB channels or frequencies (no matter what equipment the use, even at 4W, or even CB) or

They cant operate in CB channels using HAM Equipment, but can do so with regular CB equipment.

You can't take operate in CB freqs. using Ham type equipment, no matter WHO you are or what kind of license you have. You can't take a 10 meter rig and mod it to operate in the 11 meter band.

Beyond that a licensed Ham operator is perfectly legal operating in the CB freqs using legal CB equipment, just like anyone else.

Export 10Meter

I agree with the above. Lots of Guys, especially OTR truck drivers buy " Export " 10 meter radios, and have them converted to 11 meter ( very simple on most ) . This way you get more power, channels, and what ever else your looking for. I was an OTR driver for years, and still have a few of these radios. President Lincoln, Ranger RG 99, Connex 3300 HP. In actuality, my favorite when it came down to it, was a worked over Cobra 148/Uniden Grant. I just recently picked up a Ranger TR 696 FD1, which is the old 148/Grant chassis with a 6 digit freq counter from the factory. Most/all of your " Export " radios are NOT type accepted if that makes a difference to you, just glorified CB's. HTH, Al

Thank you guys. I spoke to someone today regarding the matter. He was misinformed, he was told (or understood) that HAMs in the United States are not able to operate CB equipment once they had their license. Which would be extremely odd, given that Hams are (in most cases) better radio operators than CB operators. Im not knocking the CB band... we all had to start somewhere

Thanks.
