I am in the planning phase of a trip to Tiera Del Fuego and am in question about being able to take my Ham Radio with me. I have found about half the countries accept a IARP accompanied by my U.S. amateur license, but the remainder require a special license issued by their equivalent of the FCC. Anyone out there have any experience traveling thru Central/South America and operating a ham radio?

I have some experience with 2m band radios in Mexico. Neither the police or federales have issues with them and I've gone through multiple state checkpoints. They used to though, as the 2m was the radio system of choice by the Chiapan rebels back in the 90's. Also, I have it on good authority that 2m is ok in Belize too. It might be different for ham radios though.

My question is why do you want to have a radio?

what's Mexico's official rule for US licensees to use a radio down there if anybody knows?
