update

Hey Guys,

I was on the repeater today and asking for feedback on the Bauofeng radios. I was told that the software that comes with the radio may contain a virus. They guys highly recommend the CHIRP software that RJ discussed.

They also recommended an 2m/440 mag mount antenna ($30) and an adapter to connect the antenna

Hope this helps and gets others into HAM radio

My BF did not come with any mfr software, but I remember reading that it can be downloaded from a mfr site. I don't recall discussions of a virus in it, but that it was so crappy and CHIRP was darn good, so I never bothered to get the mfr software. If there's a virus involved, boy am I glad that i never bothered with it.

New GA cruiser owner here, and also a HAM.

For the BaoFeng handheld radio, throw out the manual that came with it and go here : miklor. Get Chirp and do not bother with the factory SW. As said before by others.

Tech license is a breeze. Take the practice exams (free) at http://hamexam.org/ until you are scoring 90% and you will easily pass. I am an EE so it was very easy for me, in fact I passed 'em all and have my AE ticket.

I am pulling my rig from my Tacoma which is going to be sold, and putting it in my newly purchased Cruiser: Kenwood TM-D710A. I plan to wire the radio to the dash speaker and put a mic connector in an unused space in the dash. Radio unit will live under the seat, and I'll be drilling the roof for an NMO antenna mount as soon as I can figure out how to fish the coax thru the headliner and down the side pillars. Conrtol head will be mounted to the dash somewhere. But for now I'm using a handheld in the Cruiser.
