So, I'm a little perplexed with getting the front bearing of the counter shaft all the way on the counter shaft so the the grove shows for the snap ring.
However, measuring the distance on the shaft, the inner bearing race seems is too wide. It's almost like the thrust washer needs to be removed like the H41's have.
Now the bearing removed is identical (size and part number) to the original that was in there and my photo (pre-disassembly) shows it in there fine.

Does anyone know what I'm missing here?

Looks like you have two spacers on the layshaft. There should only be one.

Yeah, you might be right.
Where the hell, or even how the hell would there be 2 washers on there. They are pretty specific and I don't have any lying around.
Will try and seperate it from the shaft

They don't come off with the old bearing, so I would guess it's the original washer.

OK, I've found the reason. Thanks for your help.
I didn't pay much attention, but that washer is part of the bearing. It's seated in the bearing, so looks complete.
When you pull the bearing off, that washer remains behind.

Now getting it off is a right pain. I've tried all sorts. I think I'm going to need to sleeve a bit of round pipe over the shaft and weld it to the washer and the crank it out.

I had the same issue, from memory. If you knock the rear layshaft bearing out again and move the shaft back, you should be able to get something down there to prise it off.
