Here are some cutoff pics with HIDs. If you look at the pic in post 43, you can see the way the light should look. I am guessing the HIDs are not focused correctly because a standard bulb had the E-code cutoff. I have aimed my lights about as low as you can and have been driving off the residual light. If I aim them correctly, I blind everyone on the road.

What bulbs do you have? My hid kit I had in the depos looked nothing like that. I wasn't flashed at all in the 6ish month period I had them in.

I bet you get flashed all the time with a cutoff like that.

I was running the Prolumen HIDs and the bulbs that came with them. This is the kit:

Next Thursday....a nice FX-R Bi-Xenon HID projector retrofit in deop's is in the works ;)
Someone, not mentioning any names, cost me $200 :grinpimp:

Nice! You will love them:hillbilly:

Sorry for being such a newbie on this issue

Question -

1. Do I need the Slee harness for the depot lights?

2. will they fit in a 1997 LX450 without modification?

3. With Gary's adapters do I need to change or add any relays?

thanks so much

Ditto for Q #2...

Picked up a set of the Depot headlights on eBay. The wiring is an H1/H4 style bulb. I couldn't find a thread on Mud that explained how to wire these bulbs up so here it is:

Search results for Toyota depo landcruiser in Car & Truck Parts & Accessories
The lens is clear glass not plastic and build quality is not OEM by any means but well made.

Another thread on these headlights

H1 Ground and positive lead. The positive is the center lead. If you look at the plug that goes directly on the bulb you can see one leg is the outer portion and you can trace it to the terminal.

H4 pinout looking at the rear of the bulb with the middle pin on top:
Left - Gnd
Right - High Beam
Top - Low Beam

Napa part numbers:
H1 female plug = LS6480
H4 female plug = LS6479
H1 bulb 55watt = BP1255/H1
H4 bulb 55/60 watt = BP1260/H4

Female 9005/9006 plug and pins - need to find a source. Black with 2 ribs inside is high beams, grey with one rib on the inside is the low beams.
Just an update on the parts numbers LS6480 has been sub'ed out with LS6247.
Also It might just be easier to go with http://innovativewiring.com/?page_id=189

With H1 H4, in low beam only the H4 low beam is on.

In high beam, H4 low beam is off and H4 and H1 high beam is on.

With 9005 and 9006 one is high beam and the other is low beam. The adaptor harness above does not address this difference. Another relay would be needed to make it work properly with H4 and H1 bulbs.

Depends on what you are looking for.

You are correct that you do not gain the functionality of the dual purpose H4 bulbs, in effect the high beam on the H4 bulbs are ignored and you get only the lows. But Toyota doesn't turn off the low beams anyway, and high beams (even with stock setup, let alone H4/H1) are extremely bright.

I don't think you'd really gain much with the highs on the H4 instead of the lows on the H4, especially given how little (relatively) most people use high beams to begin with.

I was looking closely at the picture on the website and it looks like there is a wire for the high and low beam leads on the H4's. I am wondering if they have jumpered the high beam lead to H1 power lead?....

I ordered one so I will let everyone know when it arrives.

Unless you put a true 110w H1 bulbs in the high beam spot. :hillbilly:

I had a little fender bender which busted my LHS headlight and just recently changed both sets to the DEPO units.

I have kept the same H4 bulbs that I had in the JDM headlights, but decided to use 110w Philips bulbs (for "off-road use only" the package says) in the high beam spots (JDM had H3C fogs in the same spot).

I have only gotten the RHS to work only so far (), but the difference was noticeable to say the least. (I still need to tweak the aiming)

I shouldn't use the high beams when the vehicle is not moving (for cooling) and even then I should not use them for too long at a time. I will have to beef up the harness, etc... in the near future.

I do live in a deer country, so I tend to use the high beams more often than some folks. So every extra lumen counts. :D

Hope all is well with you and the loved ones, Ebag!

I noticed the same thing. Not sure where it goes (didn't open the harness) but the highs on the H4 don't light up when the high beams are kicked on.

How well did the fogs work there? Seems they'd be too high.

I also live in deer country, so know what you mean. Just couldn't justify a few extra lumens for 5x the price. Of course I wasn't looking at your monster H1 bulbs either, which I wouldn't feel comfortable running with the OEM harness.

The fogs, especially with the yellow color looks cool, whether in the rain or used just as a DRL, but did not do too great in the snow.

And as for the high-wattage bulbs, I will let you know which one goes first, the OEM harness or the reflector. :hillbilly:

I'm still learning how to read Toyota's wiring diagrams, so I may not understand them correctly, but I spent some time comparing the wiring diagrams for the US '91 FJ80 and the rest-of-world '90 HDJ80 wired for H4/H1 lamps. A significant difference is how the low beams are grounded; the US FJ80 low beam is always grounded so low beams will stay on with high beams. The H4 HDJ80 low beam is directly grounded only when low beam is selected, when high beam is selected the low beam is grounded through the high beam indicator in the gauge cluster. I think this reduces the current through the low beams enough so that they don't illuminate at all when high beams are selected - they aren't turned off, just starved.

I'm grateful that the high beams on my H4s work; don't really know how much more they add to the H1s but I figure every legal watt helps.
