Hello All,

Recently purchased an ECASA built 1977 HJ45 12v (are they not all 12v?) that was an already extremely clean but then semi-restod truck from CR. We'd searched for a 45 for the last four years or so and couldn't pass up one of the recent imports. It's home in TX with our 55. We are Toyota diesel novices but have gmc, vw and kubota diesels that we have not had to do much with.

I have a coworker going back home to Costa Rica for a couple of weeks and he offered to bring back parts that I don't have easy access to. I could use your help compiling a parts wish list. We're big on preventative maintenance and a stock of spares for all of our vehicles.

So far that are H specific:
Oil Filters x6
Air Filters x6
Fuel Filters x6
Plastic concertina pump prime cover
a/c bracket and compressor (unlikely but worth a shot)

45 specific which are definitely on the wish side due to rarity:
teq mud flaps and mounts
bed bows and canopy
pto winch

Thank you for any suggestions you might provide!

The PTO winch is not 45 specific, but the same across all 40 series trucks, for a given year. Yours is a '77, so it does not have the splitcase transfer, which makes sourcing the pto gear box a bit simpler. The hard parts to find, IME, are the brackets for mounting the PTO driveshaft onto the frame at the pillow blocks.

Not sure if the H engine was ever fitted with an AC unit, and equally unsure if the later 2H type mounting bracket can be fitted or not. I'm guessing not a bolt-on sort of proposition. You would also need the harmonic balancer with the extra pulley to drive the AC compressor.

Personally, I would go for 12 filters, although the WIX that I use on my 2H is easily sourced through Amazon. You will change oil more often than air or fuel.

I would run through two oil changes within 1000 miles, maybe run a can of tranny fluid or sea foam, you never know how much sludge is inside.

Run an injector cleaner through the tank and then a lubricant additive after that, these old injection pumps were used to really slick fuel.

Get a service manual. Most of the parts on this engine fuel wise are serviceable at diesel shops.

I would get a new injector pump diaphragm as the leather tends to crack.

Check the valve train as the rocker arms are known to wear with improper adjustment and infrequent oil changes (I have one bad one but I am replacing all 12).

FLUSH the coolant system, I did, it was gross, now it is very clean, H heads do not like overheating.

Enjoy it, I find it to be a very pleasant (albeit slow) diesel engine that chugs along quite well even at the 5000 feet that I live at.

HJ45

Couple more :

The "H" motor bible

TEQ Mud Flaps

My "H" diesel has 147,000 kilometers on it, runs exceptional, you just need to "Cruise" and not expect freeway speeds.

Good Luck, truck looks great, 55 is awesome.

Thank you for the replies and info. Waiting to hear what he was able to find. I do have a bosch pump spare but the factory is not leaking at the moment.

We've had to replace the clutch master and slave in the last two weeks. Bizarre but otherwise it makes us smile every time we see it!

Thanks again,

James
