As the title says. I grounded out my Alternator when I was loosening the holding bolt in order to replace the belt. My ratchet touched the Rectifier stud that sticks up and whammo! The next thing I know my ratchet surprisingly still works but, my socket is slightly deformed and the thought of how much $$$ this is gonna cost me to fix is starting to sink in. I know i probably shouldnt have left the batteries hooked up but, i thought this belt swap was gonna be pretty straight forward. Needless to say I just continued with the Alt belt replacement. Sure enough... after i was done, my truck wont start among other things.

1. truck wont turn over but, i can hear starter solenoid kick out.
2. I have no dash, no parking, brake lights or glue plug lights. The trans temp light comes on as norm and I have working head lights.
3. I removed the Voltage regulator and it looks ok.
4. I dont know where the fusible links are but, all the under dash fuses appear ok.

1989 JDM HJ60 with a 2H and Auto. Alternator is w/o IC regulator and obviously has an external Voltage Regulator.

Any help or insight would be very much appreciated. This truck is my DD so....this really sucks.

Thanks,
Phil

x2 on fusible link ... you are not the only person who has done that ....

Well, I am pretty sure the PO was kind enough to remove the fusible links....I think. I am assuming the wires that go to the bolted connection are the fusible links maybe??? All the wires that go to and from the RH and LH batteries look good with no burns. The fuse panel under the dash has absolutely no power to it. The noise I thought was the starter solenoid kicking out isnt what it is. Its the relay box thats closest to the grill (I cant read what it says but its beside the glow plug relay) when i turn the key forward thats when it clicks. Anyways, my DD HJ60 is still dead and I have no idea where to go from here.

Oh, another thing i forgot to mention. You know when your re-connecting the battery terminals and it sparks alittle on the battery post?..........well thats not happening anymore.

That plug with the two wires coming out of it is a fusible link set up.

The one wire that's not connected and dangling looks like another link that's been disabled and has come apart.

Check them with test light or DVOM to see if you have continuity on each side of the wire. If no continuity, then hook 'em up/fix them and go.

Well, the hard wired yellow to orange/white wire that you see dangling.....was the culprit. Having no knowledge of what a fusible link was or looked like and when the truck wouldnt start. That wire was already broken and looked like it was purposefully disabled so I payed no attention to it. After some long chats and Blackberry photo text messages with Ed (87HJ60). I took a closer look at the red splice connector and noticed one end was burnt and the end of the wire was melted. Some gator clips and some freshly stripped wire and wollah! The truck is back to life.

temporarily hard wired until i get the proper .140 OD (3.8mm)replacement fusible link.

Thanks everyone
