If you were going to take someone brand new to Off highway driving out for the first time, which trail would you take them on? For the sake of argument let's say they have a stock 2011 4Runner, trail edition.

I noticed your request is for off-highway recommendations, not off-road recommendations. I would recommend Rampart Range road from Woodland Park to COS. It comes out in Garden of the Gods and is very scenic with a few short spurs to play around on.

Another alternative is Old Stage/Gold Camp roads. There are many side trails to try without getting into difficulties.

323/324 loop including winding stairs. I think traildamage.com calls it ice cave road or something like that. Very mild trail, but scenic an long enough to have fun.

Are you looking for something close to Colorado Springs, or is anywhere in the state fair game?

I would think that the focus would be on good views, small obstacles, and no shelf roads?

For truly easy runs I would vote for a pass road - something like Shrine Pass, Weston Pass, or Cottonwood pass. These are borderline Subaru-grade, but would peak some interest for off-highway travel.

I like Kingston Peak west of Boulder for something that is a bit harder than a dirt road, has great views, but does not present any serious challenges. Georgia Pass is another good choice, crossing over between Breckenridge (summit county) and Jefferson (Park county).

Some great ideas everyone! Co Springs in general, but the entire state is certainly game. We're working on some new thoughts, which is where this question comes from ;)
