I recently discovered my rear hatch seal is leaking (dreaded wet carpet in left rear corner of cargo area - whale tail so not 3rd brake light; verified w/ progressive hose testing). I removed the seal, inspected, cleaned, and ultimately decided to order new (6788160111). I'm waiting for the rear hatch surround to dry before thoroughly cleaning built up dirt/gunk.
The hatch seal appeared to be glued on w/ the same stuff used on the plastic door vapor barriers. The seal also may have had a specialized grease on the underside as well (or 20 years of gunk - although it seems uniform-ish and reminds me of old white lithium grease). Is RTV recommended when installing the new seal? Should I grease the underside of the flange as well? If so, any recommendations?
I'm also going to start using Honda's Shin Etsu grease on my weather stripping. Folks swear by it, and it seems like a good maintenance task.
