I am on the road and trying to find gps software that has not been phased out like that of the garmin software for laptops. Here is the key elements I would like to see in the software.

Ability to record all km trips from home to client then to home. Or home to client and then client to home. It would be nice if I can edit those trips and place the purpous of the trip for tax reasons.

The ability to tell me how long till I get to the destination on highway trips.

Ability to show the path to get back on the highway if there is a detour.

This gps will have maps for the British Columbia Canada Market.

I use a cheap Garmin Nuvi 1300LM (doesn't have Canada maps, but obviously you can get a unit that does).

Turn on the trip log feature (I presume most Nuvi's can do that). It will create a bread crumb log that you can then upload to your laptop/pc in the office. I run mapsource (just because I'm familiar with it and don't need basecamp for now) and can read in the log file - in fact it is a standard format, so many of my other mapping programs can also use the log file. Do with the log file whatever it is you need.

The Nuvi obviously takes care of the rest of the navigation routing ETA stuff etc etc. I've also loaded additional maps into the unit (internal memory and also via the micro SD slot). So, I have US streets (default with the unit) + topo maps of the US. I can slip in Australian streets and also top maps.

Anyhow, seems like all you need is a standard vehicle GPS unit with the ability to store a tracklog of where you've been.

What happened to a paper logbook and a pencil in the car? :)

cheers,
george.

That's what commercial drivers use.

rustybucket; you might look at Microsoft Streets and trips, they sell a combo pack that comes with a Pharos "puck" style GPS with internal antenna.
I would not be surprised if someone hadn't written a third party program that worked with it to do exactly what you want.

$56 at Sears but you can find the combo cheaper.
