Our vehicle GPS, a Garmin 1490, has frozen up several times recently. Once 2 or 3 months ago and several times today. Could not turn it on or off then. Eventually did resume.

This bad news or inconsequential per your experience?

Hit it till it works, if it breaks it needed replacing anyway...

cheers,
george.

seemed like software although the power button didn't do squat, but then again this does not look like a mechanical switch, more like an interrupt signal.

will see also if there is no upgrade on the OS available.

fortunately, bought it at Costco. Although I dislike returning things there after more than a year or so.

Had trouble with a Magellan, and their lousy customer service, before but that was different, the unit would freeze when near power lines.

it would normally not be a big deal except we're on the road in an unknown city and depending too much on the otherwise wonderful benefits of a big gps. Dang these things are great! Who would have thought these would be possible, 20 years ago.

I had a local PD fry my TomTom and radar detector with something once. I had to go to the TomTom website and reprogram it but the Beltronics ended up in the trash.

My Nuvi isnt thrilled with GMRS frequencies. Tries to start a shut down once in a while,

Interesting. I don't think I've used mine together with the ham radio but that might be good to try...

As a data point, I fired up my eTrex after many months of disuse and it was seemingly randomly shutting itself off while acquiring satellites or shortly thereafter. After updating via the Garmin Updater it seems to be back up and running, 'though this glitch served to remind me that it is best to have paper charts and a compass when it really counts. PFM is awesome until it isn't.
