Newbie here so please forgive the dumb question. I just bought a 2005 Landcruiser and need to know what is the latest disc version I need for the GPS System. There was no disc at the time of purchase. I also would like to know where to purchase the disc instead of the dealer if at all possible. The Cruiser is located in Washington state. Thanks in advance for all the help and look forward to learning alot about my new Cruiser.

Another fellow 100 Cruiser in WA State, welcome!

So your 2005 came with no disk whatsoever? When you turn the car on does the NAV just have a black screen and say no disk available?

The last time I checked, around Feb time period, the latest Toyota NAV disk was dated Sept 2009 and version 9.1. The best place hands down is American Toyota from Cruiser Dan (CDan). Normal dealer price is $300, they sell it for $200. Give them a call at 866-591-4837

Anthony is correct - latest release is 9.1 and your cruiser should have a gen 4 or gen 5 system. YOu have to get the disc to match your generation. CDan great, ebay sometimes has good deals as well.

The navigation system in an '05 LC is Generation 4. The DVD player for the navigation system is under the passenger seat and the DVD stays in there all the time. Turn the ignition key to accessory, open the DVD door and push eject to see if there is a disk. The navigation manual will tell you how to check which version of disk you have using the touch screen without actually looking at the disk. If you have no disk at all in the DVD player for the navigation system and want one just to get started, I'll give you my Generation 4 Version 3.2 disk from my '04 LC. It will work, but the data will be from Sept. 2003. Toyota releases updates each year in the fall and the first number of the version is the year of the data on the disk. I updated mine last year. Send me a private message if interested. Otherwise, call CDan.

Is the information updated only data such as road information or does the actual visual appearance of the screen update also to a more modern look.

Only the information like roads, points of interests, etc. The visual appearance will not change. You are stuck with the GEN 4 look and feel due to the hardware, not the disc.

Ah, ok. It was worth a shot. Tks for the info

No worries, never hurts to ask! Enjoy that new 2005 LC!

I too wish they had made the system able to completely software upgradable and not just the maps and POIs. One feature that our new Garmin has that I wish our Toy nav had is the ability to navigate directly to coordinates. Now getting into some backwoods (no real woods around here though) exploring and being able to "drop bread crumbs" or navigate to specific coordinates would be most useful for tracing trails. Well, maybe someone in Toyota will read this and say, "Hey, now that is a great idea!". I would even be ok with it being a "good" idea!

On my last outing, it was funny to have two separate navs going at the same time. One was better at some things, as mentioned above, and the other was better at others, like finding my way back to the hotel!

My '02 still has the original disk due to the price, but I will update soon... maybe in 2012, just before the Apocalypse.

I have an 03 Lx with the 2002/2003 nav disk. Here is my question.

If i purchase a new nav disk with the most current version (which i believe was released in sept/oct of 2010), will the disk be made for the gen 2/3 nav system or are the most current versions applicable to only the 2004 and up (gen 4 + ) nav systems?
