The 8800 is a good radio. No complaints here.
How do you know what you want or why you would want one unless you're fulfilling some predetermined poser expedition checklist.

Ya, you found me out....
Not.
I am communications engineer by trade and manage a group of engineers supporting a wireless voice and data network covering Santa Barbara to the Mex border (base stations, mobiles, etc)....So ya, i kinda no my sh_t when it comes to comm gear
. I will admit i haven't played much with amateur gear and freq's, but i have an idea of what works in the field.I did check out a guys truck that had a ht with external antenna that worked fairly well. The ht was really something to backpack with (just got back from a 5 day solo trip doing the Rae Lakes loop in the Sierra..Worked well and was able to get out to a few repeaters in the western valley.
I really just want a mounted, higher powered radio in the truck full-time as i know physically were a majority of the repeaters are located and where i spend my rare free time, it might be a stretch to hit them on 5w.... Dont know, but i am open to any and all suggestions...
