Gorgeous troopy on ebay

It has been on Ebay before, and his reserve has to be around $40,000. As I recall, it got to around $35,000 last time around and his reserve was not met. It is shocking that it is selling for so much, given the VIN history makes the car highly illegal. The sad thing is that if Customs gets wind of this, it can be confiscated and crushed. I sure wish the guy was a bit less forthright about registration.....

Cheers,

Josh

Wow! I had no idea it was iilegal. Is this because they were never imported into the country.

Frankly, the guy should take $29900 for it and RUN LIKE HELL!!!!! :D

Not worth the reserve, not worth 29900.

But theres an ass for every seat and people with more money than sense.

It is an '84, so it is not 25 years old yet. He could import it if he went through all of the import rubbish (for instance, by putting a US-Spec Vortec in it, US DOT glass, seat belts and lights, etc), or wait until it is 25 years old. Switching the VINs is a crime because it is mis-representing what the car is for a nefarious purpose- ie: to get it on the road without propper inspections, etc. This is similar to (although certainly not as extreme as) the idea of a wanted criminal using someone else's driver's licence or passport to get around, so that they do not get caught by the police.

Where this will generally bite someone is if the car is in an accident. The insurance company will refuse to pay out when they discover that it is not a 1964 FJ45 (and rest-assured that the insurance claims people will look at every angle they can not to pay out), and the cops will then become involved because it will be turned over to them by the insurance company. Add to that the fact the whomever the owner hit will now be going after the owner because he is, in effect, un-insured.

At any rate, there are plenty of legally imported troopies out there; I can't imagine why someone would pay that kind of money for one that is not. But I do have to hand it to the bloke who is selling it: he is honest about the history of the rig, and the buyer will have no one to blame but himself if a problem arises. Granted, it is unlikely that a problem will arise, but why take the chance?

Cheers,

Josh

Also, I know, for a fact, that if you do not have the customs/DOT paperwork in hand, some states will not title the vehicle without inspection and smog, even if its 25 years old. Their argument is that you have to have paperwork that shows it was '25 years old WHEN it was imported'. If you imported it in 1995, for example, and the vehicle is a 1984, you will still have to pass emission, etc., because it wasn't 25 years old when it was imported.

I'd sure like to see a pic of the frame where the VIN # is stamped. Wonder if they tried to hide it, or just slapped the early VIN plate on the firewall. It's a beautiful rig and Steve does some really nice work. Too bad someone had to mess with it.

been saying this for YEARS and its the reason I wont own a re-titled Cruiser, regardless of what it is......I have too much to loose.

There are ways to make it legal again even without the paperwork. If the buyer pays me $5K, I'll tell him how to do it. Anyone bidding that high for that truck certainly has more money to waste.

I've seen late model non-US cruiser vin numbers that are the shorter/older style vin. Not the VIN style that the US converted to (in about 1981). They don't need to change the VIN it's already the short style VIN. Due to this fact the VIN number is not in the online systems and a person can say the vehicle is any year they want. Vehicle inspectors automatically assume the vehicle is older than '81 since it has the short VIN.

VIN tag has the year stamped on it though.

The only way to make an imported vehicle less than 25 years old legal to drive on US roads is to make it US DOT and EPA compliant. It is easy to get a title, but just because its titled doesn't make it legal. I have imported cars since the early 80s and have seen most of the loopholes, but I have also seen the destruction a crusher can do, so I can say from personal experience that it is not worth it.
I have to say that the guy is nuts for trying to sell any of his cars for what he is asking. I am with 1tontoy on this one.

X2 I pity the person who buys it. They prolly won't know the potential problems

Maybe VIN tags for US markets

Should have another tag that has the date of manufacture on it as well.
