Another thing to consider, CruiserDrew, is the new Lowrance XOG. They just came out and I got one for Christmas!!! I think it's going to be everything I need for under $300.

Wow-that's a great price-I don't need fancy, just a good solid GPS. Thanks for the heads up.

Andrew....just picked up the Magellan Crossover....very nice, portable, in the car, with topo. I think it was $320 after a price match at EMS. We are very happy with it.

I run the Garmin 18? hockey puck. It came with on/off road topo software. I can switch back and forth between topo and street versions. It covers the entire continental USA and costs $115.

I use an old P3 PC to view a very satisfactory screen shot.

I need to ditch the PC inverter and go 12-12 direct and get a better pc mount than bungee cords.

I also use an Etrex Venture to feed my 2m APRS and use another Venture for running around the woods on foot. One complaint about older GPS that do not have any antenna stub is they take a long time to aquire and may lose the SAT in dense woods. I have been hiking with someone who has a GPS with just a little antenna stub on a portable GPS and they never lost the SAT signal.

What did you end up with Andy?

JB

Andrew- used the XOG this weekend. I think it will be perfect for what you need. The Magellan has a (slightly) better chipset, but Lowrance has better support and is a bit cheaper. Both will need Topo maps downloaded, but I was getting turn by turn directions on USFS roads.
