Going through Phoenix routes?

Hello citizens of the Valley of the Sun. I have a question that has been on my mind forever. What way through Phoenix is the least painful on the psyche going from Tucson to Flagstaff? I find myself driving to Flagstaff on Monday morning and just curious which way is best other than going through Payson and adding at least an extra hour.

Is the construction on the 101 bad enough to avoid around 7:30 am?

Traffic at 730 is not too bad, better if you hit Phx at 0700. I10 to I17 is the fastest without adding extra miles. Most traffic on 17 will be headed south so it should be manageable.

In Phx earlier is always better
