I am having 5:29 gears installed in a 8" diff housing with arb. The garage which are doing the job for me are having trouble with getting the pinion far enough back, even without any shims its still not good enough.

I have given him 3 different diff-houses but still he doesnt seem to get it right.

Could it be him or the gears?

Have anyone here experienced the same?

Gears

Sounds like you might need a different gear shop. What gears are you using? Also what pinion bearings? What is the thickness of the pinion head? If you are using the v6 gears in a 4cyl housing you need a different pinion bearing. Sounds like this might be the case.

The number of available gear shops in norway are few... Maybe one or two... But both of them are 1500miles away, and the one who does mine at the moment is quite good with us-diffs...

I think its youkon gears, with SKF bearings nr 32307jn and 30306jn

Would this help??? What pinion bearings do I need?

Is the pinion depth wrong for the gear setup or is the pinion too deep because it is hitting the ARB? I had a gearset one time that had to be milled a little bit because the end of the pinion stuck out a few thouandths too much. It cleared the old detroit just fine, but it was hitting the ARB when we tried to drop it in.

I will post a pic of one side of the tooth marks, so you can tell me... more or less shims... On the other side the tooth marks are on the opposite side...

Its not to deep, it doesnt have any shims and he thinks its supposed to be further "back"... less than 0 shims...

When the pattern runs off of the face of the tooth the pinion is too shallow, so shim it out, set the backlash, and read it again. If you are like me then you will probably make several adjustments until you pass it, then you'll have to back up a little bit. Be prepared to pull the carrier again and again until you get it right. Yukon gears come with really good instructions that have lots of pictures to compare your patterns to. Also you wrote" On the other side of the tooth the marks are on the opposite side" I took that to mean that on the coast side the mark is closer to the toe of the tooth. This is not as big a deal as having the mark too close to the root or running off of the face of the tooth. Just keep messing with it and if your mechanic thinks that this sounds wrong, tell him that you do too, and you just want to prove that some guy you met on the internet is wrong.

This is exactly what i thought the first time he didnt get it right... That he needed to shim it out... And I told him, but he was sure about his case... He`s the experienced mechanic...

I actually didn't pay the mechanic this time, because of a breakdown due to the fact that he didn't use lock tight the last time he installed new gears for me.

When I was en-route for Lapland trophy in july my rear diff broke down, the carrier bearing bolts had unscrewed itself so the gears didnt connect anymore. It only made small markings on the edge of the gears so I managed to get them setup in Finland after having to change to my spare diff (which I luckily brought with me, but since the gears in that one was 4:56 I had to get the diff setup to be able to compete) So I had to change diff for the second time in 24hrs... Which was.... Not like I had planned the competition, but I managed to get it fixed and managed to be able to run with 4wd for a whole hour of the 24hr competition... But THAT wasnt his fault. I broke down the left cv joint when rescuing a sweeet and sexy blond Swedish girl... And she was very happy to be able to continue and I never saw her again...

So he bought med new gears, and was supposed to set it up again... We will see how it goes...

The worst case scenario now is if the new shop don't get it right and that I have to wait 1 month for new gears from the u.s.

WAit a minute....the guy you went to F-ed it up the first time and you went back?!?!

:ban:

Yeah, I went back... He had to buy me knew gears, and do the job once more... I even got him to, eh... he agreed to set up a new diff so I would be able to continue to use the "old" one... And that way get another diff with the right gears...

But my new shop is working on it now, he said earlier that it was a bit difficult to get these gears right. But he is working on it... and hopefully I will have it tomorrow...

So, I had my reasons to go back... But now I won`t... He will have to do some other work for me instead!

I think you understand my position...

Please double check and make sure the first shop who owed you new gears didn't buy you cheap Genuine Gears!!! They are known to have a hard time getting a good pattern, so if the shop is having problems this is a possiblity.

Your right on the money, the gears was/is genuine...

But now the diff is ready, and I will hopefully receive it tomorrow! Looking forward to it...

a few pix...

Hi Knixen.... My first post :) It's still too shallow....needs to be 5 or 10 thou deeper. I recently had the same clearance issue installing a Motive 529 with an ARB and the solution is simple....grind.
