so I was thinking of an alternative option for gas cans and mounting. I was thinking of getting a couple of the boat gas tanks that are 6gal. They lay flat and have a quick connect I could possible set up with a fuel pump. They are nice because of the low profile for the roof rack and with the fuel pump you would not have to take them down to refuel.
Does anyone have any experience with these tanks?
Does the venting cause leaks?

Am I just way off?

The outboard tanks we had included a vent in the line that connected to the motor.

It will defenetly puke gas out the vent when it gets too hot. Do the have any that you can close the vent?

I use a boat tank, it does build up pressure but has not been a big deal even in temp and altitude change. We strap it down on the rack above the gas cap. When I fill my tank I just unkink the hose and the pressure does the rest.

The tanks for my boat have a vent in the gas cap. Yes, gas could splash out if you left the vent open. Part of the pre-flight on the boat is to open the vent, otherwise you will collapse the tank and stall your motor.

I don't think marine gas tanks have a vent, the tank vents through the fuel line to the engine.

The caps on all my marine tanks are vented. Otherwise your outboard would "suck the tank in" and stall your engine.

I had to do a little googling to figure this one out.
Actually they did not have a vent at one time, I dated myself. The only outboards I remember are from my youth back when they used pressurized two line tanks, at least on the old outboards we owned did. One line pressurized the tank forced fuel out through the other line to the motor. The filler cap had a screw vent you used to release the pressure when the tanks were not in use. The lines also had a squeeze bulb you used to get the initial pressure up to get the motor started.

My job at the end of the day was to disconnect the fuel line, stow it around the tank, vent the caps and let the motor run dry while I waited by the dock for Dad to get the trailer. I can smell two stroke exhaust just remembering it.

I used one of those 6 gal marine tanks on the roof for quite a while. It had a didn't have a vent, but I plugged the 90* connector that was supposed to accept the fuel line. I just matched the size and thread and plugged it with a brass petcock. I would just screw the brass on enough to prevent spillage, but it would still vent. Then I used a super siphon to fill my tank when needed from the main fill cap. Mine eventually aged in the sun bad enough that I retired it. I was planning to replace it but the prices on those tanks went up 50-70% and I haven't had a trip lately where I needed extra petrol.

Now that you guys have mentioned it, I think I'm going to put one up on my rack! It's a great idea.... I love it because it keeps the load "low and spread out" much better than my old 5 gallon jerry cans.

On the vents....2 summers ago, in my smaller 16' Whaler I "forgot" to open the vent in the cap, and by the middle of the day it was all "ballooned up" and looking like it was going to explode at any second! I opened the vent, and it helped right away..... Ever since then, I keep the little screws opened all the way up until there is like 2 full threads holding it, so it won't fall out.

And yes, them tanks have gotten ridiculously expensive. I just watch Craigslist, and snatch them up used.
