I've been looking around on the GPS forums and haven't found what I'm looking for and I know LC folks are pretty ingenieous. Here goes.

Has anyone installed a streetpilot with voice directions and altered the power cord to get rid of the funky speaker/cig. lighter?

What I'm looking for to hardwire the power cord and use the existing 3" speakers (not currently used) in the dash of my 80 for the audio directions That way all the wiring can be hidden except the power adapter and antenna connector.

Yes. I did it. I removed the speaker from the integrated speaker/cig adapter and you simply connect the wires appropriately. I don't rememer the colors, but two wires go to cig adapter: one is ground the other is hot 12v. Then there are two wires that go it the speaker. It's really simple. You can call me if you'd like at the office tomorrow: 858-720-1339.

I've seen this mod described on a GPS discussion board. One thing I remember being noted was that this mod will void your warranty.

Garmin's little cig lighter/speaker is the ONLY thing I don't like from the research I've done. Pulling the purchase trigger on a 2730 despite this little thing.

Mobi-arc (forgot your real name),
Thanks for the info. Did you re-use the existing speaker or use one/both of the OEM dash units? As Brent mentioned that is the only obnoxious thing about the unit.

Brent,
I can understand voiding of the warranty if the unit is installed without the 1A fuse protection.

I pulled the speaker/cig lighter assy apart this morning. The following are the wire color codes:

Power
Black - ground "-"
Red - positive "+"

Speaker
White - ground "-"
Brown - positive "+"

Unknown input/output on side of unit. Maybe headset or helmet output????
Green
Orange

I was going to try and hardwire it today but I have so much other stuff I need to be doing to get ready for the move.

I re-used the existing speaker and placed it in the garage door opener compartment by the sun-roof controls. I cut the cable with about 10 or 12 inches. Disconnected the speaker and re-soldered it after I ran the wires. Drilled a small hole in the roof-liner behind the rear-view mirrow and ran the cable into the pod above the garage door compartment. Tapped ground, 12v, and stashed the speaker in the garage door compartment, firing downward. Works like a champ....plenty loud enough. Streetpilot suction-cup mounted below and slightly behind and to the right of the rear view mirror. Easy to see and use, but it does interfere with the passenger sunvisor....sucks for my Wife. I can snap some pics if you'd like.

Scott,
Pics would be great. I like the idea of the overhead location and re-using the Garmin speaker. I still haven't settled on a final location for the unit.

Maybe a RAM mount but until I buy the wife a car w/ a navigation system or another Steetpilot it'll have to be somewhat portable.

Why not just grab the signal from the line-out jack on the unit and wire it to your current stereo?

There is no line out jack on the unit just the 20ga. wiring to the speaker that is part of the cig lighter/speaker assy.

This is certainly an option to use in my truck since all my stuff is hard mounted. Save the speaker unit for the wife's car.

When I get moved I'll jump into this. I think I have 20 or 22 ga twisted pair to make the run from the unit's cable up the A pillar to the overhead light/console.

Took some pics... will post them tomorrow (Friday) from the office.

yep,
It's entirely possible to use the cable from the 2730, I just haven't looked at yet. Thanks for pointing that out though.

I see you are just waiting to get the fat ticket for having things "mounted" to your windshield :)

Don't laugh, it has happened to more than one person in California.

Actually, because it's all tucked behind the mirror up in the darkened glass area, it's pretty hard to see. That being said, I acknowledge it's a violation and could get me a fix-it ticket....which is about as worrisome as a cloudy day.

At least you have a serious radar detector and a real radio.

How do you like the suction cup RAM mount?

Works well. I'm on my second one as the first got old and crusty as the rubber deteriorated. It's solid. Minimal vibration. I don't have wires hanging all over the place and it can be reversed should I decide to remove it.

LOL! - you're the only guy, next to me, that I know of with a V1 in a Landcruiser! Kind of funny IMHO, given all the awesome power we've got! I to am aware of Kalifornia's laws regarding suction cup mounts. Debating on that or a stalk coming up from the center console.

I agree. Not likely to break any speed records in this thing, but the V1 has saved my ass a number of times.

Is that RAM mount the standard 3" arm or did you go with the shorter arm? Still debating where I want this mounted. I'm leaning toward a stalk mount off the center console, but other option is the suction cup mount by the pillar. That may be too close to the steering wheel tho. Problem with a stalk mount is that the standard one is 3", you can get a 5.25", both aluminum or longer 6,8 or 12 inch, but those are a PVC post. At least with the stalk mount, no possibility of a suction cup mount ticket.

Any other info on the wiring?

Can't find the GPS discussion board I'd found earlier. Any recommendations?

BTW - Dirty Parts in Culver City does this wiring mod. They order a second cig lighter/speaker so you still have one for portable use and one you leave hardwired. Not a bad idea.

Anyone used the FM transmitter feature? Still need to activate my XM. Will be stuck with the FM transmitter feature until I upgrade the stock headunit.
