Garmin Etrex vista hcx users

Hi All,
I am still somewhat fuzzy on using my garmin etrex even after a few years of ownership. Main purpose is to use it for creating some basic trail maps and being able to upload onto my PC.
The existing map is very poor and want to know what people are using for free topo downloadable maps and desktop software for copying waypoints and trails created.
I did see a program called mapwel.com, but have a feeling that may be too much.
Any advise would be appreciated.

was a while back but I was able to download both much more detailed road maps and topo maps for free to my etrex venture cx. Must have posted here about it at the time.

Our data cards include highly details Topo maps for AZ, CO, and Moab, UT along with all of our trail information & waypoints. We embedded our data into the maps, which can be found at GPSFileDepot.com & MiscJunk.org
