Should I ??

I like the idea of galvanizing the bumper and the swingouts.
At this moment the bumper is un finished.

Whats the good bad and the ugly on this? anybody seen this done?

What say you?

Thanks, ken

welding to galvanized sucks..

Scratch the surface coating off and it rusts..

Kinda expensive compared to rattle can.

Other than that, it is a durable finish that does a good job keeping rust away..

I rattlecan the powdercoat that gets scraped off.

easy. fast. cheap.

It's just gonna get scraped off again...

that's my logic anyhow...

How well does a top-coat over a cold-galvanize base work?

There is a product that is galvanize in a can .
Basically rattle can galvanize for repair/touchup.
So the scraping off issue wouldnt be that big of deal, not as easy as flat black
but doable.

thanks , ken

galv will actually self heal a small scratch but not a larger one. complex shapes do not galv. well without proper precautions and can distort slightly.

you can grind off the galv. and weld then paint with a product called galvacon we do that at work here and it seems to last quite well.

right now I can get a stair structure galv. for almost the same price as epoxy paint!!!

chet thanks for the first hand info
Soo do you think its a retarded idea should I just paint or powder coat the thing?

I got a quote of 130.00$ not including sandblasting for hot dip.

thanks again for the info guys.

Should have just gone stainless.
Personally, once I actaully finish my rear bumper and sliders (80% done now) I will grind/sand down, prime and paint. It will just get banked up and scratched up anyway. Think longterm touch up ease.

Ken,
I like the cheap ass rattle can jazz for just about anything that will (inevitably) get scratched again!
I donno much about galvanizing and the long term benefits of it. With that said, if it will hold up better than paint, Id say go for it...
It would be worth it in savings if that's the case.

Where's the pics of the bumper!?

Chicago

AH pics, as soon as it is done.
The bumper is on for now but will be comming off soon for duel swing outs and other fine touches.
Then I plan to re install and live with it for a while before I commit to paint/powdercoat ..... whatever.
As for the long term benefits galv. is long lasting and pretty tough and by doing a dip almost garuntees total coverage.
I dont know maybee it will be primer forever?

Ken-We live in an almost rust free environment. Your bumper, even rattle canned, will out last your truck. If you ever want to modify it or change it in any way it will be more dangerous to weld on it. I would prime it, paint it, and be happy. But that's just me.

Hey,
now Andy brings up a good point that often escapes me when Im thinking about steel product. For some reason I seem to forget that Im no longer in Chicago where you can sit and watch stuff rust right before your eyes...
Damn I love it out here

NOW...get it painted and post the pics!

If you want anything done so it almost never gets scratched you want it powder coated, I got my quad frame powder coated and that is some of the most amazing stuff i've ever seen, there are some gouges in it now, but after 5 years of hard riding there isn't any spots you can see bear metal.
