security electrical problem: for no apparent reason security system alert initiates and sometimes car will not start. Key fob turns off alert

Pull all that crap out. Problem solved.

No alarm is going to prevent a thief from stealing your truck. You need a 24/7 armed guard or a very large dog.

The alarm system was factory installed and permeates everything. I don't know how to pull it out. So far I've just pulled the horn module to keep the noise down. Sometimes you'll see the security light flashing and I have to use key fob to stop it; other times it just does nothing when you turn the key and if you wait 10 mins or so it will then start.

There are no "factory" installed alarms available on 80s. They were all port or dealer installed, and some of them pretty poorly. They are not all that invasive to the factory wiring, and not very difficult to remove. Just do a quick search for "RS3000 removal" and you'll get lots of info on the subject.

The systems are dated and repair parts are as rare as hens teeth - even if 100% functional they leave a lot to be desired. Pull it out. If you still want keyless/alarm buy a good modern aftermarket kit and have it professionally installed.

It wasn't installed by the factory; it was installed at the dealership where the truck was sold new.

Remove the plastic cover on the left side of the driver's floor and pull back the carpet. You'll see all the wires from the controller under the seat. They're tapped into the factory harness with vampire taps. Cut them out and your problem is solved. It's not that hard. If you need pictures, there are numerous threads on here showing the process in detail.

^ That's a doc I found on the port installed rs3000 system. You could use it to perform the alarm lobotomy. There's also at least one write up somewhere on this forum of the steps to remove the system. Then you can at least determine if the alarm is at fault or not... It could also be there horrible 3M 'taps' they may have used during the port install...

cheers,
george.

If it is indeed a RS3000 Toyota alarm, it's only going to activate based on a couple things. It is most likely a faulty or failing door courtesy switch that is indicating a door is being opened, and then causing the alarm to activate. It does incorporate a starter interrupt circuit, which should be reset once you hit the key fob a time or two and get things back to normal.

As others have said, those systems are at best nearly 30 years old, and a bit wonky. I went to great lengths to get mine working when I bought my 80 a couple years ago, and it's been pretty solid. That said, I have everything sitting here to replace it with a more modern remote start system, with a remote that has greater than 36" range from the vehicle.

If you look under your drivers seat and see a black box zip tied to the carpet with a wire harness plugged into it, you've got the factory RS3000 system. you should be able to remove it in less than 30 minutes, and get your vehicle back to "stock".
