Went down to the 2nd sandbar below the lowhead dam today with my two boys, dog, kayak and a canoe.

We hadn't been there more than 30 minutes or so when a guy in full camo carrying a hunting bow walked up. He was real friendly and did me the courtesy of explaining that the city of Jackson is handing out $300.00 fines and impounding your vehicle on the spot if you can't pay. You cover storage, towing and the fine on retrieval.

He also said they have plans to close the gate up again.

Sad news for those of us who love to fish or just drive down there to enjoy the ambience.

He said the land below the dam belongs partly to the city and partly to a hunting club. The land across the river belongs to the hunting club and some doctor further up. He has people arrested according to this guy.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I'd hate to see anyone get slapped with a fine or get arrested. He did say they will allow mountain bikes and you can park there but not drive down the trails. Doesn't make much sense.

I'm not entirely sure how to interpret this. Was he just trying to scare me off or is this for real? I'd like to know where to read/hear a more official word on all this.

Bummer!

I hate to hear that. It sure sucks to have a good wheeling spot closed off. It happens all the time on the coast. Even more so since Katrina b/c so much development is taking place north of the interstate. A favorite river spot just got posted the other day after going there for 15+yrs and now it appears that is going to be a new neighborhood. Bummer!

Chuck! good to hear from you.
Something must be done. I'm just not sure what. It's a big complicated topic.
