Ok guys so I'm a recovering FJ60 addict. My buddy has an 86 pickup that is blowing the main fuse or fusible link as some might call it. Any way whatever it is called it's the big 80 amp one. It's blowing the fuse every once in awhile-2 in the last month. The radio stops working, the blinkers, starter, and maybe the heater blower. What does this sound like? I think the alternator has a case of runaway current or the battery has an internal short as I couldn't track down any bare wires despite the mess. As far as I can tell even though stuff is now butchered under there, it appears as if all wires are running to the right places but can not be sure. He took it to have some other work done ( egr gasket) not even close to the same area and it came back with the burned fuse. I think it was just a coincidence but my buddy being a non mechanical type took it back and said fix it. Well.... the shop did a real bang up job on it and the Chiltons manual we have does not have a very good schematic. Should the the current from alternator run through the fusible link or should it be hooked to the battery side? Maybe the alternator is putting out to much current. I can not believe how shotty the work is I mean i grew up in the sticks playing with farm equipment and such and this is pretty bad even by my standards.
What do you guys think? My buddy is coming over a little later and I'm gonna see what kind of voltage the thing is putting out. If he ever takes it back to that shop I will probably punch him the face...nahhh but I'll give him a fair ration of crap.

yeah that fuseable link looks fawked...

as I recall, the fuseable link on my HiLux trucks was on the negative side...

What is a voltmeter telling you, at the starter, alternator, and battery???

P.S. I'm gonna need better pics, of the whole engine bay, and of a bit closer too

sorry man, the fuseable link should be on the actual (-) battery cable, and not IN/OUT of the fuse box...

I used to blow my external voltage regulators on my HiLux trucks regularly, that had the same symptoms.

It looks like your fusebox has a crossed wire to me...check your in's and out's and see where stuff is going!!!

Scratches head. All my Toyota fusible links go from the battery positive (+) to the engine bay fuse block. Also the alternator output wire goes directly to the fuse block end of the 80A fusible link.

Get a copy of the FSM and consult the wiring diagrams in it. There are links to various years in the https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyo...q-frequently-asked-questions.html#post2089654 thread.

Yeah i sold my last HiLux at least 6 years ago so I ws going off of mental memory...I was thinking last night that my main fuseable link that fried on me a few times in the '84 and '80 was on the (+) side of the battery, heading to the starter or alternator...but I think it was closer to 30A...

That large blocky fuse looks like the ones on my Tacoma, not like any I have seen on LC or Hilux.

HPD-
What is all of that stuff?
Where do those wires go to or come from?

I would personally, if it were mine, have to figure all that out before i could get to rewiring that fuse block set-up...

I also would suspect the internal voltage regulator on the alternator (or bad diodes) might be contributing to your fuse blowing.
