hi all

well i am smelling some fuel semll in the cab of the 40, more obvious on the passenger side.

I am thinking my steps to make this better are:

1) replace and refresh the fuel line from the tank to the filter ( i am running the original OEM line that is clear , but it is hard and brittle )

2) replace the fuel sender seal with a new seal

3) replace the filler neck elbow rubber with a fresh new connector.

4) have oem cap, and want to keep it that way, is the rubber seal replaceable?

Any other insites are appreciated :)

Tank was relined recently so i "should" not have any pinhole leaks.
I wish they sold the old square tanks still new from toyota, looks iek they only sell 1968+ tanks, which are a dif shape.

Chime in please :)

When you replace the cap with an OEM cap it has a seal on the inside. I think it was Poser who told me this recently :) I checked, and he wasn't lying ;)

cool man thanks :)

I cannot find anyone that will refit the cold brass compression fitting ( BST i believe ) from the old OEM line that connects to the tank nipple.

Where are you guys getting yours done? it is driving me nuts/

Do you need a machine to put a new line in the old fitting?

saw this thread:

But it did not show how to reuse the old compression fitting hardware on new lines...

How is that done?

Is there a clip/ ring on the hose side? how does this thing come apart?

fitting looks liek this:

That was my pic. There is a compression fitting on the bottom nut. I had to heat my old lines up to get everything to melt apart. I couldn't find the compression fitting so I took the top nut and furrel and put them on new hose. I then clamped the new hose on with hose clamps from the hardware store. Works like a charm with no leaks and no gas smell.

Edit: There may be a way to have the compression fitting pressed out but I'm not sure it could be reused. Hope this helps some.

oh cool

do you have any photos of when you did that?

I am not sure i understand how ya did it :)

I have an extra fitting, ican melt out the old hose if need be, but i do nto get how i can convert the old bits to take a new hose so ic an run a new line from my gas tank nipple to the filter :)

ok so i pulled the seat out, seems liek the smell is coming from the fuel sender area and the rubber bit connecting the filler neck to the tank ( possibly the cap, but har to say until i can get the filler neck hose replaced.

down side is that one of the screws holding the fuel send popped off when i tried to pull it off, i think i can get it out though once i get the sender off if i am careful.

So jsut replcae or make a new seal for the fuel sender? and replcae the hose between the filler neck and see what i net?

This is how I did mine. May not be the official way but it works wells and doesn't look terrible.

Check the vapor plastic deal mounted to the side near the fuel filler.

ok kids

I pulled the conector apart and these are all the bits

Looks like the flange nipple bits go inside the retaining nut that connects to the tank or female thread nipple.

Then the lug/compression fitting is pressed onto the flanged nipple with the hosed and just pressed on untill it clears the flare.

Seems pretty simple, am i missing any bits?

Seems simple, photos:

popped in a brass fitting that will force the bit semi flush in the retain so i can press the hose and retaining nut on.

i try to get some clear hose from one of the shops and run a test later if you guys think this looks spot on :D

ok fellas found some gasoline rated amber lines :D

Down side is that they are slightly small in thickness that the OEM ones so the press on retaining nut is too loose to work effectively. I can either use another kidna hose clamp, or search some dirt bike or tractor stores for some thicker amber lines.

thse amber lines are availbale at this place by the foot for anyone interested:

Oil Filter Service Co Inc | Portland, OR 97214 | DexKnows.com™

I likely search around a bit more and see if i can find a larger size thickness hose so i can reuse the pressure retainer.

Looks like you've got all the pieces there. Yes I used the same setup from tank to filter and from filter to pump. I was under the impression that the compression fitting was pressed into the lower nut after the hose had been inserted. I didn't figure I'd get a strong hold by reusing it so I went with hose clamps cause I knew that would work.

As for the gasket, Specter has them for cheap.

cool man :)

yeah i might end up going with some sort of hose clamp :)

Are the sending units the same for 1968 as for 64? ( the gasket i mean )
