Quick details - 97 FZJ80 150k miles. Truck has been sitting 10 months. Back in town to pick it up. Started probably every other month by "caretaker". Last start 2 months ago. Today, no-go. CEL is illuminated. Cranks with spark (pulled plug and witnessed), no start. Makes a drawn out "wheezing" sound and no sputtering. A quick spray of starter fluid creates a normal starting sound for a few seconds which lead me to a fuel issue. At the point in the diagnostic for pulling fuel return at regulator - no fuel being pumped on start. Pulled viewing plate - Fuel pump ohms are good. Apply power to pump and get a low dull thump and low dull "hum". It does NOT sound like it is pumping/flowing(very low noise) and nothing is coming out at the reg. There is a sound, but I expected it to be much louder. It just sounds like maybe its "stuck". Gas is bad and has now been drained. The pump seems way too quiet. I'm guessing it's locked up for some reason which is pretty rare occurrence. Only other thought is fuel filter is clogged, but the fuel wasn't separated. It had sta-bil and just stunk like bad gas. Thoughts? On a time crunch and need to drive 1,500 miles back to where I came from......any help is greatly appreciated. The main question I suppose is should the pump sound fairly loud? Before I scramble to dump money on a $400 overnight pump I'd rather spend $25 on a fuel filter but I'm short on time. Thoughts?
