What is the fuel milage of a 22re virus a 6cyl?
I am looking a getting a toyota 4wd pickup and need the experts to help. This will start out being a comuter and later a trail rig since the wife is keeping the FJ60 for her and the kids. I am not sure of the year yet and most likely will look for an extra cab.

Thanks for all and any help.

Derek

Stay away from the 3.0 v6.

If you can, try to get a Tacoma or 3rd gen 4Runner with the 3.4 5VZ-FE or the 2.7 3RZ-FE
the 3.0 sucks ass.
The 22re, while one of toyotas best designs, is underpowered.

The 3RZ-FE and the 5VZ-FE are probably 2 of toyotas better designs.
Both have EXCELLENT power, reliability and longevity.

But if you have your heart set on a 2nd gen, either get a blown v6 truck and swap in a 5VZ-FE or get the 22RE and put up with the lack of power.

22 re is about 23 mpg depending on how its set up i run 33's my bud runs 32's and gets the same
3.blow gets about 12 to 17 from what has been reported to me, and on top of it its just a crappy engine in general due to unreliability, and its only got like 20 or 30 more hp than the 22re (woohoo)

It's not unreliable per say.
The motor was designed when you could still use asbestos for head gaskets. Then asbestos was :ban: . And there isn't anythign that comes close to the heat shielding ability's of asbestos.

Since my rebuild on my 3.SLOW (and I should have put in a 3.4 ) my worst tank was 11 mpg my best has been 17mpg.

The 22re will get you don't the road just fine with 235s on, but if you move to 31s, it is a bit of a dog. If you go to 33s you would be best served by regearing..

Think of the 3.0 like a chevy engine, it works, but only sometimes and not very well

my 3.0 had 222,000 miles on it when I rebuilt it.
If it wasn't for the rod knock, it would have probaly lasted another 150,000 miles. Heck it still started every single time with no compression in one cylinder. It still had good oil pressure.

My father has a 2.8 liter V6 in his Fiero.
It's got 120,000 miles on it, and needs to be rebuilt. Low oil pressure, rod knocks, no compression.

The 3.0 got a bad rap because of the head gasket problem. But if the recall was done, and done properly (alot of dealerships would just replace the head gasket, not redeck the block and heads, and would reuse the stretch to yield head bolts) they last just fine.

They are just underpowered, and get bad gas mileage.

my 3.0 headgasket blew at 140,000. Its slow, sluggish, and makes some weird noises sometimes. Id rather have a 22re then my 3.slow. 12-17 psshh. I was getting 11. stay away from a 3.0 or ull be kickin ur own butt later on.
