I'll probably be putting my 8800 up for sale and I'm giving Socal80's a heads up.

Yaesu FT-8800. Ten months old, with probably less than 10 hours on it. Comes complete with separation kit and 15 ft of 10 gauge dual power wire with some powerpole connectors. Also comes with blank warranty card. It's probably still under warranty. I also have the software for it (but no cable).

Bought it at HRO for $349, and then bought a Icom 706MkII shortly thereafter. It's been sitting in the box in my garage ever since.

I'm thinking $325. That's about $50 off of a new one (with tax).

I might be interested. We are thinking of getting into HAM, but I haven't researched at all so I don't know anything. Where does this particular unit fall in the range of products available and what are it's benefits/disadvantages vs other products? No need for a big description as I will search around, but I'd appreciate some pointers. Thanks. Markus

Hey Markus,

The 8800 is what Johnny and I use. Its a great radio for 2 meter and 440, which I think are the two most popular bands used by new HAMs. I know the offroad community mainly uses 2 meter. Also, the most popular repeaters are also on 2 meter.

The good thing abuot this radio is that you can monitor two frequencies at one time, which makes it way easier and its very helpfull. I leave the left side on a repeater frequency and the right side on a simplex(radio to radio).

The seperation kit is cool because you have the ability to mount face of the radio in front of the car. You can install the main unit anywere else in the car, that way you dont have a big radio up front, and you dont have to the run all the wire to the front.

Its a great radio.

Thanks Harry. That's good info. So can one of the two bands be CB so that I can get rid of my CB or do I have to carry a Ham and the CB?

Unfortunatley, no. I know you can listen in on many non-ham frequencies, but you cannot transmit on them. I have never tried to tune into a cb frequency. Maybe others could chime in.

I listen in on the Burbank airport freq from my house, but anytime I try to transmit, the radio gives me an error message. I know some people on mud have tried modifying there radios to enable the transmission of non-ham frequencys for emergencies. With this mod, you can even transmit on gmrs and frs although its illegal.

Hey what a coincidence, been thinking about that very radio for some time, sounds like it would work :hhmm:

Put me second in line behind A/B if he doesn't go.

Thanks, Dan.

So, is it for sale for sure? Your post implies you're only thinking of selling it....

Marcus - I own two FT-8800's. One in the cruiser and one in the Miata. Ham has NO relation to CB. Harry has given you a great quick and dirty as to why I like the dual band also. I can scan local repeaters on one band and national simplex or our adopted cruiser frequency on the other band. The detachable face plate does make mounting/installing the radio much more flexible.

If you run with folks still using CB's you're going to have to hold on to that as well. I still have both in the cruiser.

My friend currently has it. I have to get it back from him. I gave it to him to use, but he hasn't installed it and it's been sitting in the box in his garage for four months or so. So I told him that I was going to be selling it since he wasn't using it.

He's in La Canada and I don't know when I'll have the time to go pick it up.

He might just decide to keep it and pay me for it or one of his buddies might want to buy it. But if one of you were to say "if it's for sale then I've take it", then I would bump it up the priority list. I've got a bunch of stuff going on right now.

I can't answer for Marcus, but if it's for sale and he decides it's a no-go for him, I'll take it. No rush.

Dan.

Dan - sounds like you're more ready than I am - go for it. I just spent $$$$ on a trailer and will spend $$ more to get it modded to my specs so I'm probably better off staying out of HAM for now. Don't need any more hobbies or expenses. Sounds like the one to get though when I'm ready.

Dan bought the radio.

Thanks Mike, and especially for making the trip up to the BIG CAMPUS! I'll keep my eyes open for any job prospects.

Now I just have to figure out the best spot for it, this is the kind of bling I can deal with!

Dan.

If you mount the body under the drivers seat, you can still hear the radio. If you mount the radio in the back, you'll need an external speaker. For an external speaker, I suggest the MLS-100 (Yeasu/Vertex) that sounds real good and is $50. I'll probably pick up one of these down the road.
