We will probably be rolling into town about the time you are leaving. Think we will cross the mississippi river at vicksburg or memphis around the 6th or 7th. I have to work until the 4th and will take a few days to get my stuff packed. Any tips for trails or anything else would be appreciated. I have a guide book for SoCal and AZ but nothing for NM.

Just got daughter a guitar for christmas. Maybe one day she will play like you.

Take exit 81, turn left (south)onto ice caves road. Drive ca 1/2 mile till you see the sign for Zuni canyon on the right. Turn right. Follow this road through the village and into the canyon. Stay on this road till it becomes gravel and continue for 5 miles or so. Enjoy the scenery and watch for ice on the road. You will probably want to engage 4x4 because of snow and ice. There are numerous short side trails worth checking out. After ca 5 miles you will come to a fork and sign which will say bonita canyon. Turn left. At this point it gets a little rougher. You will follow a snowy, Muddy, unmaintained track for 10 miles or so all the way back to the pavement-- 53(ice caves rd). Turn left on 53 and head back to I40. Depending on how much snow there is you should be able to do the whole thing in an hour. Its medium slow under normal conditions, slow under winter. The scenery is stunning, especially in winter.

Another option which I highly recommend is canyon de chelly just over the border in AZ. Check your map for directions. You will have to have a navajo guide ride with you for a fee. The canyon should provide numerous icy river crossings and a moderatly challenging trail. It is well worth seeing. Some great cliff dwelleings and ancient rock art in a gorgeous rd sand stone canyon. Its legendary. It has been written up in toyota trails at least once. I did this trip in my 60 a few years ago. Take pix for us!
