Front drums -> disc?

What do you mean "milirary axle"? If it is a portal axle it'll be worth some coin, if it is simply a drum brake axle from a later year truck, it's a large paperweight!

i converted my 40 to discs and never looked back...i bought a 45 project and one of the first things i got for it was a 60 front axle that i could steal the brakes off of.so for me, disc brakes are right up there on things to do...of course right now my 45 has NO brakes so, that was my solution

I've been out of the 40 & 55 & 50 scene for some time. You can adapt 60's brakes to the 40 front end?

Yes, easily. You need all of the FJ60 bits though, knuckle, steering arm, spindle, hub, birfield etc. Your 45 may have coarse spline axles depending on year, and if that's the case, you'll need new inner axles too.

You also need a conical bushing to convert the taper in the steering arm to fit the Fj40 sized tie rod ends.

The biggest advantage of the FJ60 parts is ditching the weak and crappy coarse spline birfield. That alone is enough reason to do the swap.

One more question, can the "knuckle out" from a 60 be used? (As I can get parts on the easy from a local 60). I'm thinking no, but your help appreciated.

Not quite sure I understand. If you make the swap, swap the knuckle and everything attached to it and inside it.

Is the stub shaft of the birf of these off shore drum brake trucks fine spline or coarse? (I know the inner spline count inside the birf star will be 27).

Sounds like a great truck.

You should need just the knuckles and rotors and calipers since it is an 83 it will have the "disc " birfields and hubs.
I did a conversion on a 78 Oz RHD 40 and it all worked
