My front dome light only goes on (95') with the switch. Opening the door only activates the middle and rear when the switch is in the correct position. Is there a way to mKe the front dome do the same...turn on when I open my door?

Good question. The front lights are 'map' lights and aren't designed to come on with an open door, but I think you know that.

The 'dome' lights are turned on by supplying a ground. The question is whether the 'map' lights are wired that way as well, I don't know for sure but I'd guess not....

I wonder if the passenger seat area lights cound be plugged in the replace the front lights...they proveide an option for on/ off and door as I recall

What's not possible with a spool if wire! It would be easy to jump it off the middle courtesy light switch. You could isolate the circuit from the middle and still keep the switch function of the map lights.

:hmm:

I seem to recall a thread where someone tried to make that happen...
I recall that he was successful, but it was more trouble than I felt like dealing with.

I did it on my old Tacoma, and it basically involved running a jumper wire from the dome light to the map light, but there was also some other complexities that I can't recall at the moment. I'll see if I can find the link.

Edit: Here it is:

Different truck obviously, but the concept is the same.

Thanks for the information, I think I'm going to put this on my list of "hope to figure it out and run with it" mods. I never understood why they didn't have a front light that comes on with an open door...I guess I will try to run a jumper over from the second row lights to the front map light to provide power when the door is open with the second row switch in the open door position. Thanks again!!

Bringing back to life

Has anyone tried this or been successful in this?

It annoys me and this idea seems like the simplest solution.
I was thinking about doing the same thing and found this thread.

Mine is a 97, and the front map light does not come on when you open the front doors. It only comes on when you flick the switch.
I want to be able to use the switch like normal, but have the map light come on when all the doors are opened.

No reason it wouldn't work. Just run a wire from the switched side of the map light to the door switch harness. You'll need to look through the EWD to figure out the easiest place to splice that.

But, with the warm-white LED arrays from ebay in the domes, i never feel like i *need the map light.

There's no external wire to tap into for the map light, you'll have to tap into the light/switch assembly.

Right. You want to run a wire directly from the switch or the light socket (the ground side should be switched iirc), to the door switch harness. Which you may not have to access at the door switch itself.

Might be neat to wire it into the dimmer system for the ring around the ignition switch. You'll need an NPN transistor.

I did something like this on my 89 pickup. I jumped a review mirror light to my dome and it worked fine. I sidereal it all together and didn't have to remove the head liner. Not sure what your set up is like but it should work assuming you ground it right.

"ground it right" is the operative term here. These are switched on the ground side.
