I had that happen to me at Rubithon 2004. When I got home and was about to start to unload the truck, I noticed a small drop of oil around the drain plug.
Got close to take a look and it was completely loose. I was very lucky that it did not fall off on the freeway.

Weld that bung up.

I've seen too many come out on the trail, leaving a long dirty mess to clean up.
Double nut the lowest stud, and use it to drain the differential.

I replaced the lowest stud with a bolt - makes changing diffs a snap
