Q- how does this bugger pop off?

the victim- 2008 LC w/torn outter boot

Ive read all the threads about removing the axle e.g use a pry bar or the STT (slide hammer)...should get a little "pop" then it should slide free. Im meeting a lot of resistance using a pry bar, the inner shaft has about 1/8 of play in it then its a dead stop. Im at the point of giving it a wack with a BAH but wanted to check the forum first.

so whats the secret?

thanks

The C-clip on the end of the inner shaft needs to be in the right orientation. Try spinning it slightly and retry over and over at different positions (simpler with a helper). Simplest method for me is a hammer and chisel on the edge of that ring that is to the right of your pry bar. Hope that helps.

thanks 40TUDE...how can you tell if the C clip is in the right position, its internal so cant be seen? do you just keep turning the shaft and hitting it with a hammer and chisel until it comes loose, hoping to get the propr position?

You are correct, it cannot be seen from the outside. Sometimes you can see a paint mark on the axle showing the location if you’re very lucky. You will most likely have to do the spin and try routine. Good idea to make a paint mark for next time around.

thanks for the tip on spining the axle, it worked.... the old even a blind squirrel finds a nut trick

Was about to say this. My buddy just did CVs on his GX470 and ran into the same issue. Instead of prying he tapped it toward the hub and it popped right out.

Pry bars don't shock it enough, a blunt chisel and one tap and it should come free.
