Due to my current circumstances, my primary drive to work is about a quarter mile. (Yes, I know, I can walk it). Because the temp is often in the 40s, I will remote start the car and let it run for several minutes, before I drive. Sometimes 3-5 minutes, sometimes it runs the full 10 and then shots off. When I begin driving, I am able to discern, I think, when the thermostat opens up based upon the changes in the heat. I will often drive a mile or so, roundtrip, before going to work, to enjoy the view and to let the motor really warm up. Maybe half the time I do that.

If I recall correctly, some of the BMWs that I had in the past (90s and early 2000s 5s and 7s) did NOT like to have the engines run at idle, for long periods of time (define long?), but I cannot remember why...

Any (informed) thoughts on best practices for this situation?

Also, I am going to be installing the Harrop supercharger in a couple of weeks. It is my understanding that I will always want to make sure the engine and trans are warmed up, before running the engine hard at all. I have no issues with that. I am not necessarily concerned with blowing something out, because I haven't warmed up, because I don't believe I will do that. I am primarily concerned about the general best practices, when I am doing a lot of very short drives.

get a used oil analysis that will give you the information you need and what’s really going on with your engine

That’ll be good, but it’ll potentially be one or two or three thousand short trips before it’s got enough mileage on the oil. So I’d like to not wait until then to make any adjustments.

I’m only at 6,000 total miles right now...

Follow your gut, you'll be fine.
You got an SC so you could put your foot in it, as long as you're at typical oil pressure and feel it's been long enough, tip on in!
